ASK A PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Joan Chinsen has been working as a physiotherapist for over 20 years, and presently is working with children who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind at a The W. Ross Macdonald School for the Visually Impaired and Deafblind in Ontario Canada.

"Can you suggest some summer exercise activites for my child who is 5 years old?   We are told we need to work on balance, strength and bilateral integration so she will start to use both sides of the body together.  We want it to be fun for her and not use the same exercises she did throughout the year so she can feel like its a vacation and yet still work hard."

The PlasmaCar © is a great toy that won the Oppenheim Toy Porfolio Platinum Award 2006 and was Nominated-Outdoor Toy of the Year 2006!   We have found the children catch on to riding the toy very easily because of its unique design.  Children with CHARGE syndrome in general have issues with balance, strenth and don't seem to use both sides of the body together crossing over at the midline.  The PlasmaCar provides a fun and unique way of addressing some of their needs without the children feeling like "its work"!

The PlasmaCar website linked here   has a video demonstration of how the car works.  There are now many dealers, but it is often found in more of the stores that deal with educational toys and materials.
