Make a Wish .....by Amy Alexandra Park

a picture of the ruins at the Parthenon in Greece

A foundation called "Make-a-Wish" came to my Mom's house last year and asked me to choose three wishes. My first wish was to go to Greece, and with an "Abracadabra"..... I got it!  I have just returned.

We had to land in Amsterdam, Holland so we went on a canal tour, which was quite nice. Then it was another nine hour flight to Athens where we stayed for a short time. Then we were off to Rhodes! We were able to stay there for three days! We went on a tour on the second day with a woman by the name of Anna Murray, who spent the whole day with us. Then the third day, we went on a tour by ourselves in a castle type thing, and saw some ruins as we went up. Then we said goodbye to Rhodes and headed to Crete.

Two gentlemen named George and Marcose picked us up. Marcose, who can't speak English very well, drove us to an apartment building about an hour away from the airport, and then out to dinner. The next day Marcose drove us around Crete for awhile, and we saw some very nice scenery along the way. Then the last day in Crete we went on a tour around an archaeological site in Crete.  Then it was a three hour flight back to Athens.

Once we got to Athens a gentleman named Costas and a woman named Naomi picked us up and drove us to "The Parthenon". It was in the process of restoration, but it was still quite nice. We also saw (from a distance) the highest point of Athens. Surprisingly, there was a church on top of it, but I found it weird because from where we were standing, it looked liked the hill was as tall as me! But then again I guess I had to be closer. That night we went for supper with Anna Murray and Naomi.

All in all it was a great trip! Without "Make a Wish" my dream would not have been possible.  Everything I studied in school came to life and I am very lucky to have such an experience!

"Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Canada" has been granting the wishes for many years for children between 3 and 17 years old who have life-threatening illnesses.

Children can be referred by:

  • medical professionals treating the child eg., doctors, nurses, social workers, child-life specialists
  • a parent or guardian of the potential wish child
  • the potential wish child

The child's medical condition is then verified by the treating physician. To find out more, contact the national office at nationaloffice@makeawish.ca or call 1-888-822-9474.
