Transition Resources

Children with disabilities need a practical and well-planned transition, especially when moving from educational programs into the adult world.  Self-esteem is enhanced when individuals have the facilitation and planned program that enable them to become an accepted part of the community.  A supportive team is also an integral part of being able to achieve success in small ways.  Learning should continue throughout life, and a stimulating and rewarding environment can be achieved with planning.  It could mean a specific program may need to be planned, one that is geared to their interests and strengths but also highlights their abilities.

A practical "how-to" text called "The Road Ahead: Transition to Adult Life for Persons with Disabilities" is now available in its 2nd edition for teachers, service providers or parents.  It does include some assessment and instructional strategies.  It also covers career development, supportive living, and the possibility for entering postsecondary education.

Also there is  a resource book called "School to Work Transition
Where Did the Time Go: Transition to Adult Life".  It covers the basics of transition, including planning for the future, looking for a job, making the most of educational decisions, finding housing, and integration into community life.
