Sensory and Security     ~ by Krista Bach

We all have five senses that give us a sense of security, and when one or more of those senses are taken away from us we feel vulnerable, and we want that sense of security back. For a very long time those who work with Deaf, Blind, and Deafblind children have been searching for a way to bring back the sense of security to some children. Devices that teacher's have said are working miracles for their children, is a vest that hugs them and one that is weighted.  They calm right down when their sensory system is on overload.  I found also a special chair that gives them a sense that they won’t fall out if they wiggle around. I thought everyone should know about these.

One vest is velcro, and you get to put it on the child and it gives the feeling of the security like a hug. How wonderful it is to finally have something so simple give a child that means the world to them.  Could it be like a feeling of being hugged, being loved, being sheltered, being secure?  The other type of vest can be homemade, and is weighted so it helps them feel pressure their sensory systems may need.  It also could be like a hug feeling.

While there are many types of chairs for children who may have problems with balance, children with CHARGE need something that makes them feel that they aren’t going to fall out and land on the ground! That is where the special chair comes in, it gives them a sense of where they are, and that they won’t fall if they sat too close to the edge, or if they lean too far over to the side.

These vests and chair are a step in the right direction. Lets keep going.
